Tips for overcoming anxiety, fear and worries about your future.
Divorce, separation or the loss of a loved one can be one of the causes of anxiety, worries and fears. When you find yourself alone again, doubts and uncertainties start to creep in. You are anxious about your future. You worry about money, health, your children, how you are going to manage your single life and whether you'll ever find love again.
If you don't find ways in managing your anxiety, it can lead to depression.
Everyone experiences panic or anxiety in small ways. In certain situations, it can save your life. In some new situations, we get panicky but when the outcome we fear fails to materialize, the anxiety stops. For someone with chronic anxiety, this is not the case.
Some of the common anxiety symptoms are palms getting sweaty, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath, sick in the stomach, restless, losing sense of self, chest pain and body cramps. If you keep getting any of these sensations, realize that you probably weren't having a heart attack but an anxiety attack.
Practical Ways in Managing and Overcoming Anxiety
Get a good night sleep.
Have you heard of the adage, sleep on it. It's a good advice. Lack of sleep can cause fatigue and cloud your mind. Even trivialities may look like a disaster when you are sick and tired of what's going on around you. During the sleep cycle, your body repairs itself. You feel more rested after several hours of restorative sleep, reaching the REM stage. Most people need eight hours a night which varies within an hour or two each way.
Do regular exercise.
Exercise helps you to use oxygen more efficiently. It helps to get more oxygen to the brain. It also increases focus which may help you see solutions to problems rather than simply worrying about them.
Relax or meditate.
Meditation is more than chanting mantras. Yoga is an exercise that involves quieting the mind and controlling your breathing. Simple mediation such as taking 5 minutes to clear your mind everyday can work wonders in overcoming anxiety.
An easy way to relax your body and mind is to lie down flat with your hands at your side. Inhale deeply through your nose slowly and exhale through your mouth. Repeat this relaxation exercise several times and especially before you sleep and upon awakening in the morning. During the day, sit upright with your hands by your side and take in a few deep breaths.
Manage your worries and emotions.
When you feel your pulse starts to quicken, count backwards from ten to one. As you count, focus on the situation. What has actually happened? Resist the urge to read anything more into the situation.
You might think that the glass of wine is relaxing your tension but alcohol is a depressant. In anxious situations you could rely too heavily on it and gain another problem in the process.
Do a relaxing activity.
Stress can rob you of your energy. One of the ways in overcoming anxiety is to do something you like such as gardening, painting, reading or listening to music on a regular basis.
Seek professional help.
If you feel that you cannot handle it by yourself, seek professional help. A professional psychologist can help you understand your apprehensions and fears and prescribe medication or other effective techniques in overcoming anxiety.
Try to remind yourself that every situation that brings anxiety is not life-threatening. You have legitimate reasons to worry and feel stressful and fearful. But they won't help you. Instead of focusing on what you have lost, concentrate in looking for solutions and finding ways to improve your life.
