Cross Stitching - How to Cross Stitch

Cross stitching is a hobby that you can start to pass your time and relax. You don't need any special skill to do it. You can find stitch patterns from books, magazines and the internet. You can make them into cushion covers, handkerchiefs and bracelets or frame them to decorate your walls. And they make great handmade gifts.

This hobby is easy to start. If you haven't tried it before and want to learn how to cross stitch, just go to a craft store and purchase any of the premade stitching kit. There are quite a number to choose from. In the kit, you will get a picture, the canvas, threads a needle and step by step instructions. The prices for the premade are as low as $5. For more detailed projects such as pillow cases, bibs and blankets, it can cost up to $100.

After your first success, you'd probably want to get a book where there are many stitch patterns to choose from . You then buy the canvas and threads separately. Adding a hoop to your project is optional but a good idea because you can then stitch more accurately.

Both the premade kit and book come with directions. The directions specify the colors to use. Specific icons represent each color. Follow the directions because there are different types of stitches. They are the normal stitch, half-stitch and a back stitch. Each stitch is performed a certain way, so familiarize yourself with each type. Go through the instruction before you start to eliminate making errors and cause frustration during the actual stitching.

Once you become experienced, you might want to create your own designs. Just choose any picture that you like and design your own pattern. For ideas, look at the existing designs available from books or browse the internet. You can also purchase a software and download it into your computer. The software will help you create counted stitch patterns from photographs. This software is available for both beginners and professionals.

So you have three methods to choose from. If it is just to pass your time, might as well get a premade kit.
